The Confessions Of Artemas Quibble ARTHUR TRAIN 9781277739664 Books

Have you heard of Howe and Hummel, Fellow Readers? They were the very well known colourful criminal lawyers of New York City from the 1860's to the 1900's. They would pay people to pretend to be the grieving wife and family of someone who might be hanged ... and perhaps deserved to be. Tears and acquittal from the jury, whenever they could get it, and all the cash their client had was their way of doing business. The Dead Rabbits and other early gangs, Lillian Russell, all sorts of shady characters had them on retainer. The author of this novelette was one of the prosecuting attorneys who ground teeth trying to wrest a conviction when Howe or Hummel appeared for the defence. So, to save more wear and tear on his dentures, he wrote this 'biography' of the two professionals. The names changed to protect the innocent [the author] from libel.

Rather good stuff. Old Fashioned but interesting.

For the real Howe and Hummel Scoundrels in Law: The Trials of Howe and Hummel, Lawyers to the Gangsters, Cops, Starlets, and Rakes Who Made the Gilded Age

I have been a fan of Train's Ephraim Tutt since I was a boy fifty years ago. I read this tale about five years ago. This is the story of an extremely shady lawyer in the bad old days. As you can see, not much of the story stuck to me, but it was an enjoyable read. Read the Tutt stories first.
Nice story, if you had any trust towards lawyers, this will erase it all)
just a lot of fun. it was in first person and artemas was making his confession. i won't say when or where as that would be a real spoiler. it gives some insight into the legal profession in the late 1890s - early 1900s in new york city. the profession does not seem to have changed much in the intervening 100+ years!
